Norplant-72 is a synthetic progestogen with a contraceptive effect and progestogenic and antiestrogenic effect. When used in recommended doses, it suppresses ovulation and prevents fertilization if sexual intercourse occurs in the pre-ovulation phase, characterized by the highest probability of fertilization. It can also lead to changes in the endometrium that prevent implantation.
The effectiveness of Norplant-72 will be minimal if implantation has already occurred. The probability of preventing pregnancy with timely taking the drug is about 85%. As longest the time interval between sexual contact and taking the drug, as less it is effective.
When taken orally, Norplant-72 is rapidly and almost 100% absorbed. After taking 0.75 mg of the drug, its maximum concentration is reached after 1.6 hours and is approximately 14.1 ng/ml. After reaching the maximum value, the concentration of Norplant-72 gradually decreases and it works only for half power after 26 hours.
Norplant-72 is approximately equally excreted in the urine and feces exclusively in the form of metabolites. Its biotransformation corresponds to the metabolic processes of steroids. Norplant-72 is hydroxylated in the liver, after which its metabolites are excreted in the form of conjugated glucuronides. Metabolites of a substance with clinically significant pharmacological activity are currently unknown.
According to the instructions, Norplant-72 is a drug, which is used as a contraception (after unprotected intercourse or sexual contact using an unreliable method of contraception).
You do not have to take Norplant-72 if you have:
Severe liver failure;
Lactase deficiency, lactose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption;
Age up to 16 years;
Pregnancy;
Hypersensitivity to any of the components.
