Accutane: Important Information
Common Use
Accutane is an isotretinoin prescription used for the treatment of serious skin disorders and some other conditions. Its active ingredient is derived from vitamin A and is naturally present in the human body, though in small amounts.
Side Effects
Side effects of Accutane are rare, as the medication is designed for long-term use. However, it may cause some of the following symptoms:
- allergic reactions (sometimes severe) or skin rashes
- vomiting, constipation, or diarrhea
- drowsiness, sleepiness, and headache
Precautions
To reduce the risk of side effects, your doctor must approve treatment with Accutane if you:
- are allergic to any foods, medications, or other substances
- suffer from osteoporosis, kidney, liver, or heart conditions
- have bone issues
- have diabetes
- have asthma
- are currently taking any prescribed or over-the-counter medications, antibiotics, steroids (e.g., prednisone), anti-seizure medications containing phenytoin, vitamin A or medications containing it
- are sensitive to any components of Accutane
- are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to have a baby
- have a history of being allergic to Accutane or other retinoids
- heart rhythm problems (irregular or too fast)
- dizziness
- chest pain or nausea
